Goliath

Goliath has a gentle playful nature, He has a congenital problem with his back legs where they did not develop correctly, despite this he loves going for walks He is active and likes to play ball. He barks when he is excited or he feels threatened by another dog. He is good with children and needs space and a garden to play.

Very sweet with humans, mini-alpha with some other dogs so living in the Refugio can be stressful for him because he is often kept separate from other dogs. He loves going for a walk and adores human company. Could live in apartment as your only dog, and happy to be left for a few hours while you go to work.

 A big, strong, alpha dog. Needs to be the only dog in the home with no kids or cats. He’s very affectionate and loving with the people he knows.

    Requires a strong experienced owner who is used to handling headstrong dogs and can dedicate time to training.

Parsero

Parsero is a sweet, peaceful dog. He prefers being with people than other dogs, but also has a playful side. He has a heart murmur and will probably need medication for the rest of his life. He loves swimming and cuddles.

Cleo arrived at the Refugio when she was very young with a fractured skull after being hit by a mototaxi.  She has made an amazing recovery and is FULL of fun and energy. She is hilariously clumsy. She’s a small playful dog and is great with other dogs and people.

Lira is almost 12 years-old and is looking for a loving home to spend her final years in.  She is a quiet, affectionate house-dog and loves cuddles. She’s good with other dogs and puppies, although she is very fearful of new people. She needs a forever home where she’ll be spoilt.

Choneta is about 14 years old and has spent her last 4 years in the Refugio.  She was born with a deformity in two of her paws, and it’s very difficult for her to get around. She is a lovely, friendly old girl - and her favorite thing in the world is sitting on the beach watching the sunset.

Junior is about 8 years old and has been in the Refugio for about a year.  He has multiple skin, joint and eye conditions and is also a very large dog with an appetite to match.  He is a gentle giant, who much prefers to spend his time with people than other dogs.  Junior LOVES swimming and his favorite hobby is destroying coconuts on the beach

Osita has the most stunning turquoise eyes.  She’s about 2 years old and is a peaceful affectionate cat.  She’s small and very, very cuddly. She has a skin condition, for which she’s currently receiving medication.

Found injured after being hit with a machete. She was rescued with her 2 puppies who have already found their forever homes. She is a beautiful girl looking for a loving home. She is gentle natured and calm, but needs time to trust new people. Good with kids.

Batman

Batman arrived in the Refugio with a horrendous injury to his tail-end, he was extremely traumatized and wouldn’t allow anybody near him for almost a month. He is still nervous, but has a lovely character and an immense personality.

Ceiba has been in the Refugio for about 3 years. She had to have a front leg amputated after being born with an untreated deformity - now,  she finds it very difficult to get around, as she is also slightly overweight.  Ceiba’s favorite thing in the world is belly-rubs, she NEVER gets tired of them.

Mimi has been cared for by the Refugio for many years, and moved into the Cats’ Dominion when it was built last year.  She’s about 6 years old and is a quiet house-cat.

La Gorda

La Gorda is about 8 years old and was rescued from a local village after she lost an eye.  She’s affectionate - but not particularly playful. She would be better as a house-cat than an outdoor cat as she LOVES to hunt. .

Pascual is a friendly, loyal dog. He loves long walks. He is fine with other dogs - but can try to dominate other males and therefore would be better in a home without male dogs. He loves people.

Pinta arrived at the Refugio after a car accident.  She is a Special Needs dog, she is epileptic, and suffers occasional fits and will be receiving life-long medication. She is a nervous but affectionate dog who needs a very special forever home, with experienced owners who are willing to meet her medical and emotional needs.

Osita lost her leg when she was very young, and has spent most of her life in the Refugio. Very playful natured and calm. Please ask any questions you have. She is very mobile and can move happily on 3 legs. She would love to find a loving home.

Goliat is a tiny ball of attitude. His name is perfect for him as he’s willing to go toe-to-toe with any dog. He’s very affectionate with people and great with kids, but his mini-alpha attitude can get him in trouble with other dogs.

Gemelo is a young friendly cat who was rescued as a kitten from a hoarder in a local village. He’s very playful and loves toys. He’s sterilized.

Chulo has been with us for a long time and is diabetic. He has a skin condition caused by his diabetes, and requires constant insulin monitoring and subsequent injections.  Although he looks wild and savage, he’s actually an affectionate sweetie who loves cuddles and chats.

Yago ihas been living in or around the Refugio for many years. He has a skin condition caused by fleas, which needs regular medication. He also needs multivitamins and steroids to build his natural defenses, and anti-flea treatments to protect him. He’s a timid, independent cat.

DO YOU WISH TO ADOPT?

One of the goals of our Shelter is to find good homes for the animals that are eligible for adoption. Our objective is to provide them with a second chance and to offer them the opportunity to live as a family member and to be loved. It’s easy, and surprisingly affordable, to adopt an animal whether it’s within Mexico or overseas - email us for more information.

If you wish to adopt, Holbox Animal Shelter will take care of preparing the necessary documents for the adoption process whether it is INSIDE OR OUTSIDE MEXICO, and, if necessay, to find volunteers who can travel and transport the animal to its new home. 

All our animals are sterilized, vaccinated and treated for parasites. They meet all health criteria for entering the US, Canada or Europe.

If you have love to give, they are ready to receive it!

There is no greater satisfaction than changing an animal’s life!
